The Self-Love Club with Mary Young

MARY YOUNG is a local Toronto line of underwear and loungewear, founded by Mary Young. We love her approach to intimate wear - her items are made with soft fabrics meant for your real body doing real activities. She also created The Self-Love Club, a concept we can totally get behind. In this post, we get to know Mary Young and her philosophy.

Can you tell us about your line?
MARY YOUNG was founded in 2014 by Mary Young, who wanted to fill the gap in the intimates market and empower women with different body types. While doing her fourth-year fashion thesis at university, she noticed a gap in the market for comfortable lingerie with minimal designs that can be worn for every occasion. She then set out to design a small collection of lingerie with no underwire, padding or reshaping aspects - focusing on the natural woman's body and celebrating every curve. And that's exactly what she did. After presenting the collection and receiving positive feedback from peers and the industry, she decided to turn her idea into a business, and MARY YOUNG was born.

Now, we offer lifestyle lingerie and lounge pieces (think the traditional 'to wear for your partner' designs blended with every day, boring, functional underwear). Every garment is designed with comfort in mind with the use of rayon from organic bamboo material, soft mesh and custom elastics to encourage appreciation of the natural shape. Our garments are designed to fit seamlessly into your wardrobe giving you confidence from the top of the morning throughout the day and into your evening.

All our products are ethically-made, and we're serious about it: Each fabric we choose is beneficial to you, giving you the right amount of versatility and durability. Our main fabric is a rayon of organic bamboo knit sourced from China. The bamboo yarn is GOTS? certified and limits the use of toxic bleaches, dyes and other chemicals during production. It’s also OEKO-TEX? certified and has passed UV testing. To reduce our carbon footprint, none of our fabrics include chlorine bleach or dyes that release carcinogenic amine compounds and the use of synthetic sizing agents is prohibited during the knitting and weaving process to avoid waste. Each garment is also great for wicking, so it doesn’t trap moisture and is breathable in every season.

All the garments are produced in Montreal, Canada, in a factory where equal wages and conditions are being met. After graduating, Mary noticed most Canadian-based companies had moved out of the country and were mass-produced. While working on the production of MARY YOUNG, she made it a priority to work with a team in the country and invest back into the economy. When she found the factory where we now produce all our garments, it was a perfect match. Mary visits the factory a couple of times a year to ensure things are running smoothly and to check in with the team.

Our goal is to inspire and empower you to feel comfortable in your natural shape. We want you to relate to our products and see yourself in MARY YOUNG. Because you deserve all the love in the world.

Can you tell us about the self-love club?
The Self Love Club is a movement powered by MARY YOUNG and we want you to be a part of it. We believe it's time to open up the dialogue within our community to focus on self-love and acceptance. The club is not us, the club is not purchasing a garment, the club is you and your attitude. Our belief is also expressed by donating $1 from every item sold to a different non-profit organization each year that focuses on benefiting women through opportunities and resources.

What was your inspiration for creating the self-love club?
The inspiration came from conversations that Mary had with many different women and customers, all focusing on discovering self-love and empowerment. These conversations inspired Mary to launch the Self Love Club so more women and men could connect around this topic and break down the barriers they often face individually. These conversations range from physical confidence to health, acceptance and challenges we all face throughout a lifetime.

How can people be part of the self-love club?
We encourage you to create a safe space within your community and friendships to talk openly and honestly about self-love. We will continue to share stories of self-love online and make a safe space to do so. We encourage you to join the movement by sharing on social using the hashtag #theselfloveclub and empowering others by joining this movement. To continue this movement expect more open conversations from us online and in-person with self-love events coming in the near future. In the meantime, continue to open up to those close to you, create a safe space and continue loving yourself every step of the way.

What do you hope people take away from The Self-Love Club the most?
We aim for our community to feel empowered and more loving not only towards others but ultimately themselves. We hope to inspire a positive ripple effect that starts with self-love and leads to overall love and acceptance in the world.
