1. What is the most wonderful thing about being a mother? How about the most challenging?

I think the most wonderful thing about being a mother is how incredibly rewarding it is to nurture your children and watch them grow into amazing young adults. When I was young I didn’t even think I wanted to have kids. I was working as a television producer and I thought I wanted to be free to travel, to work long hours, to be dedicated to my career. I’m so grateful that my perspective changed, because having children is the most rewarding work I’ve ever done, and as I say to my kids, they are my greatest production ever!

The most challenging thing for me is discipline. It’s a necessary part of being a parent, but I hate it!  Once when my daughter was  young and behaving very badly I threatened to give her a spanking. She looked up at me with inquiring eyes and said, “what’s spanking?” I immediately caved and told her, “oh nevermind, I’m never going to give you a spanking.”  Over the years, I’ve learned that being tough, and sometimes strict, is just another form of love. That makes it a little easier:-)

2. What is something surprising about you – that even your kids may not know?

I love sleeping outside, under the stars,  even though I swear up and down  that I hate camping!

3. Which products do you recommend from your line for all of the mothers out there.

My Rose-Geranium Toner is a wonderful pick-me-up. It’s refreshing and hydrating for all of those tired new moms and the floral scent is like spring and will lift your spirits. I also recommend my Frankincense and Myrrh Hand Cream as a relaxing night-time ritual. Mom’s need to practice a little self-love every once in awhile!

1. What is the most wonderful thing about being a mother? How about the most challenging?

The most wonderful thing about being a mother is feeling that somehow you’ve been chosen to chaperone these specific little people into adulthood. You can’t control who they become, but you can provide examples, tools, and boundaries along their journey – what a privilege to be called on in such a way. The most challenging thing is providing the best examples, tools, and boundaries, based on what’s right for them as developing people, rather than your own issues or needs. It really forces you to rise to your best self, and, when you fail, to rise again.

2. What is something surprising about you – that even your kids may not know?

I worked as a wrangler on a ranch in Aspen one summer. I’d get up at five, put on my straw hat and Wrangler jeans and go saddle up 50 quarter horses with 40-pound Western saddles. I guided trail rides all day for Aspen tourists, and then unsaddled all the horses in the evening. My favourite part of the day was when we’d move the horses down a long, dusty road to the lower pasture and release them for the night – they’d knicker and kick up their heels and play like toddlers. I drank black coffee all day, fell into bed by nine, and slept better than ever for that entire summer – being a cowboy is hard!

3. Which products do you recommend from your line for all of the mothers out there?

For the mom who wants to create a bedtime ritual for her child (and then herself), I’d go with our super gentle Oh So Soap, followed by Night Body Oil all over, and a special goodnight massage with the Lavender Body Mousse. It’s amazing how kids start to adapt and eventually rely on these routines, and how much easier bedtime can be. My girls still treasure their Osmia bedtime rituals!

For the mom who is exhausted right down to her DNA, our Recovery Salt Bath, Water Lily Body Oil, and Restore Facial Serum are live savers. The bath is so healing, with beautiful French grey salt and essential oils of marjoram, lavender, and juniper – like a healthy version of Calgon, it takes you away! Water Body Oil has the deeply grounding scent of vetiver, and the uplifting scent of ginger lily. And the Restore Serum can really repair the skin as you sleep – even if that sleep gets interrupted.

And for the mom who just needs a treat, I’d pick the Rose Clay Facial Soap, Milky Rose Soap, Linden Rose Hand Cream, and the Nectar Vital Rose Drops, because every mom out there has more than earned a few roses.

Nadine Artemis, founder of Living Libations

1. What is the most wonderful thing about being a mother? How about the most challenging?

The most wonderful and challenging thing about multiplying your heart and having it run wild outside of you is the profound love for your cherished child and finding the balance between holding them close and creating the space for them to expand their wings.

2. What is something surprising about you – that even your kids may not know?

When I was twenty, I interviewed midwives for a university project. This fascinating research revealed much about the business of being born and that much of modern birthing has been stripped of the wisdom of women’s and midwives’ knowledge. I carried this knowledge with me when preparing for my son’s birth. Wherever and however we choose to give birth, it is important to revive much of this sage birthing body of intelligence. There are many ways to prepare for birth and many positions to give birth. They are not all like the birth scenes from movies like “What to Expect When You Are Expecting”. I highly recommend exploring the childbirth wisdom of other cultures to glean wisdom on subjects such as: baby-carrying slings that keep babies near the heartbeat of the mother and father and offer ease of access to breast milk; multitudes of massage for mothers before, during and after birth; and creating space for the mother and family to be reprieved from household chores for the first moon cycle as a new family. As much as childbirth is exhilarating, there is much that is exhausting, and holding the space for the reception of rest in the first months creates beautiful bonding and long term fortification for the family.

3. Which products do you recommend from your line for all of the mothers out there?

Seabuckthorn Best Skin Ever, keeps skin care so simple – one bottle to beautify all – cleanses, exfoliates and moisturizes. It’s lovely all over the body after a bath or shower and prevents stretch marks too. True Blue Spirulina Shampoo and Conditioner consecrates your mane, unleashing your most luscious locks.

April Gargiulo, founder of Vintner’s Daughter

1. What is the most wonderful thing about being a mother? How about the most challenging?
There are so many incredible, amazing things for me about being a mother. So many of these I never could have anticipated, but perhaps the most rewarding is the depth of connection between me and my girls. It is unspoken and I’m sure will be tested in the teenage years, but it is something that brings me immeasurable peace and contentment.

2. What is something surprising about you – that even your kids may not know?
I'm an open book. I should have more up my sleeve!

3. Which products do you recommend from your line for all of the mothers out there?
Easy! Our Active Botanical Serum delivers glowing, radiant skin in one simple step. It was developed for the person who is super busy,  doesn't have time for lengthy skincare rituals, but doesn’t want to compromise on performance, activity and safety. Sound familiar?
