Behind the Brand with Captain Blankenship
Here at Clementine Fields we love getting to know the people behind our green beauty brands. It was obvious once we took on Captain Blankenship that we had to get to know the founder, Jana Blankenship! Here she tells us why she started her line and how to get mermaid hair.
Captain Blankenship is such a charming name. Jana, Blankenship is your last name, where did the “Captain” come from?
Blankenship is my husband's last name and when I heard it, I fell in love. When we were getting married, my friends joked that I was going to be the Captain of the Blankenship. When I started the company, I knew it was going to be Captain Blankenship. I think the name embodies the spirit of adventure and love of the natural world that is at the heart of what we do.
What inspired you, or what cataclysmic event happened that made you launch your line?
As a child, I was the one infusing pine needles and making potions. After my mom let me mix all her perfumes together into signature scents, I ended up developing a sensitivity to synthetic fragrances. Fast forward twenty years, after studying natural perfumery and herbalism, I wanted to create a beauty line that was organic, simple, effective and that smelled amazing naturally.
Your hair products are awesome! What’s the best way to get mermaid hair using Captain Blankenship?
I love to use the combo of our three Mermaid Hair Care products (Dry Shampoo, Sea Salt Hair Spray and Hair Oil) to get my perfect mermaid mane. I use the Dry Shampoo on my roots to absorb oil and add volume, the Sea Salt Spray for texture and waves and the Hair Oil to add shine and moisture to my ends. Voila, just left the beach hair!
Say we have ten minutes before we have to go to work. Can you give us your favourite hair tip for an instant ‘do?
I have two small children so am always in a hurry in the morning. I really like to use the Mermaid Hair Care products mentioned above for quick mermaid hair. Then put in two small braids, one on each side of your face. Tie them together at the back of your head, for a beachy romantic half do.
Do you have any DIY hair treatments that you'd like to share with our readers?
I have a lot, but one that is particularly great for humid summer hair is Avocado. The fatty acids in Avocado are great for soothing frizziness as well as deeply moisturizing. Just mash a ripe Avocado up with a bit of nourishing olive oil. Apply to wet hair after shampooing, leave on for 30 minutes or so and rinse out thoroughly.
Who is your hair idol?
Brigitte Bardot. I love her style and the wild chic of her hair.
