Green Lifestyle Guide to Toronto
Toronto is a green city in the literal sense, up and down neighbourhood streets you’ll spot small parks sporting a sign that reads, “A City Within a Park”. There are over 1500 of these parks, dotted throughout the city, making it look from above like a giant green garden.
In another sense of the word green, Toronto is a great place to live an active, healthy lifestyle which includes clean eating, local shopping and green beauty. Here's a shortlist of our favourite west side spots for eating, drinking, stretching and shopping, among other things.
Be Mindful: Yogaspace
A green life is made by decisions, and taking care of oneself is an important one to keep making. Yogaspace offers a yoga studio and training program, and in addition, has a wellness centre with Thai Yoga massage, hot stone massage, naturopathy, acupuncture and more. A wonderful space to connect with yourself, heal and show yourself some love.
Stretch & Tone: Barreworks
Mind over matter isn't the deal with one of Toronto's most popular workouts. A blend of dance, yoga, pilates and cardio, Barreworks is all about lengthening and strengthening. Grab a pal and stop in for a workout that will leave you feeling taller.
Shop Local: Coal Miner's Daughter
Pop into one of the three shops dotted over the west side of the city, and check out the selection of Canadian-made clothing and accessories, vintage bags and other sweet style finds. As well, make a note that this is our pick up location. Choose pick up as a shipping method, and collect your Clementine Fields order after 4pm the following day at the CMD Queen street location.
Shop Eco Goods: Logan & Finley
The "Urban General Store", Logan & Finley is stocked with eco brands like Miik, Preloved, and Pi'lo, and has everything you need for an eco urban lifestyle.
Grab a Snack: Live Organic Food Bar
One of the original spots for raw food in Toronto, Live has grown from it's sit-down restaurant on Dupont to a line of ready-to-go snacks, juices and another lunchtime location in Liberty Village. Delicious raw and vegan food that tastes great and will satisfy any appetite. Also, you can usually spot their healthy kale chips and seaweed snacks at health food stores all over town.
Refresh: Greenhouse Juice
Boasting a selection of interesting flavours and inspired healthy juice, Greenhouse is the place to pick up a day-long cleanse, a sweet treat, a midday pick-me-up, or just to stand in front of the fridge and marvel at all the colourful goodness. Try an alkaline water, a fizzy kefir, or one of the classic booster shots.
Stock the Fridge: Local Farmers Markets
What better place to find the foodstuffs to fill your fridge than at one of the many farmer's markets happening daily around town? To really live a local and green lifestyle, it's important to support the local people making it possible. Meet and chat with the farmers and their families, and become part of the ever-growing number of individuals making a move to make a greener earth. Oh - and stock up on fresh, seasonal fruits and veg too!
Get Outside: High Park
Cherry blossoms are a hit at High Park come springtime, and so they should be, but there's much more to do here more often than once a year. Take the dog and let him off leash to socialize in the dog run, bring the kids to the zoo, or stroll along the lakeside. Go on a family hike, or on a long run on your own for a healthy dose of fresh air and nature.
Spend a Saturday: Trinity Bellwoods Flea
On Saturdays, spend an hour or two browsing the handmade products of the vendors at the Trinity Bellwoods Flea. Stock up on natural soaps, handmade cards, treats and more. Check the website for dates, and note that the market isn't actually at Trinity Bellwoods park, but at 824 Dundas street west inside Studio Bar.
Afternoon Tea: Kitten & the Bear
Worth a special trip to Parkdale, Kitten & the Bear is a tiny shop tucked next to Parkdale hit spot, Parts & Labour. Every detail in this dollhouse-like boutique makes this special shop a must visit. Go for the selection of exceptional, seasonal, handmade jams (like the banana, bourbon & vanilla bean) and the artfully-created Sloane Teas. Pick up a pectin-free jam for stirring into your breakfast or topping off your chia pudding, and a beautiful artisan tea (which is as much for drinking as for admiring the pretty tin).
