Hey Now Cacao Smoothie:
Since your skin is one of the body’s major detoxing organs (yes, the skin is an organ. It’s your largest one!) anything that causes toxicity within the body, will rear its ugly head on your skin. This smoothie will help give you good skin from within!
In addition to raw cacao, this drink is super-dense in other detoxifying whole foods like spinach, blueberries, raspberries and carrots. As you know, the darker the produce, the richer it is in beneficial nutrients like antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that fight free radical damage. Plus, all the vitamin C in these fruits and veggies helps produce collagen and we all want more of that, right?!
I always have a bag of raw cacao powder in my freezer. It’s made by cold-pressing unroasted cacao beans. The process keeps the living enzymes in the cacao as well as leaves the flavonoids (antioxidants) and other nutrients in tact. This food has a long list of health benefits including improving heart health and mood, weight control, as well as anti-cancer and anti-aging properties. Plus, it tastes like magic.
The addition of Brazil nuts and other healthy fats like flax and hemp also nourish the skin by providing your body with healthy oils that reduce skin dryness and help form a protective barrier.
Using spirulina in your smoothies is a great way to incorporate this super food into your diet. It’s also a potent antioxidant and is packed with concentrated levels of vitamins and minerals, protein and skin-supportive essential omega fatty acids. It has a pretty strong flavor, though, so I recommend starting off slowly and working your way up as you develop a taste for it.
Speaking of taste, medjool dates give this smoothie a delicious sweet flavour. They contain naturally occurring sugars, which are accompanied by a list of other nutrients like vitamin A for mucous membrane and skin health.
It goes without saying that this smoothie is also loaded with fibre, which helps remove waste from your body more efficiently. The more waste you remove the right way, the less of it shows up on your skin. I rest my case. Drink this smoothie, eat good food and your skin will thank you.
- 1 c coconut milk
- 1 c loosely packed spinach
- ½ c raspberries
- ½ c blueberries
- ½ c shredded carrot
- 1 tsp spirulina
- 2 tbsp raw cacao powder
- 2 brazil nuts
- 1 tbps flax seeds
- 2 tbsp hemp seeds
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 2 pitted dates
Place all ingredients in a high-speed mixer or food processor and blend until smooth!
Makes 2 servings.
