Self Care with Kelsey Matheson

Life is a balancing act.  It’s not always graceful, it’s never perfect and sometimes we completely drop the ball.  But it’s all worth it for those moments of harmony, when everything comes together, even if it only lasts for a second.  Finding the balance between taking care of yourself and looking after others can be tricky, but it’s definitely not impossible.
Continuing with our self-care campaign, we spoke with Kelsey Matheson, who proves that the well being of oneself and of others are not mutually exclusive.  Kelsey is the co-founder and owner of Anamaya Resort, a yoga retreat in Costa Rica.  Anamaya was recently featured in Well + Good, where it was praised for its dedication to the body, mind and spirit, as well as its spectacular views, surfing opportunities and awesome food (which is supplied by Anamaya’s organic farm!).
Kelsey also co-owns Be Packs, a company committed to providing children in Zambia with education via sturdy and simple bags.  Speaking of moments of harmony, ten dollars from every pack sold goes towards sponsoring a child’s education.  Twenty packs means that one child can attend a full year of school, and will cover the cost of their uniform and one meal a day for the entire year.

Kelsey has devoted herself to making life’s balancing act easier for others, but you can’t provide others with stability unless you take care of yourself.  Here are Kelsey’s thoughts on beauty and wellness. 

1) What do you wish you had more time for?

I wish I had more time for taking care of myself. For example, booking a massage or having a relaxing bubble bath. Life can get a little crazy and for some reason, I think especially for women, self care ends up being the last item on the priority list. I think we all know intellectually how important taking time for self care is, but we have our kids, our careers, our families, and so many responsibilities that seemingly end up being more important. The reality is we can’t handle any of those areas in our lives effectively if we’re not prioritizing time to care for ourselves…so I guess that means I need to book myself a spa day!

2) What are you looking forward to when it comes to getting older?

Our culture is truly obsessed with fighting the aging process, and I’m guilty of it myself. I look for grey hairs, take notice of any new wrinkles, and pout about the changes in my metabolism. Dr Maya Angelou once said, “Getting older is great fun….if you put it in your mind that it’s fun, then it’s fun”. I think that’s the key. It’s your perception of what getting older represents. I personally want to age with appreciation and embrace it. I look forward to becoming wiser, and not caring so much about what other people think. I know my body will change, but I look forward to being at peace with that. I look forward to the experiences and journey’s I’ll have, to not caring about the little things, and to being grateful for every decade, year or day that I’m here.

3) Do you have a quick and easy wellness or beauty tip to share?

Drink one green smoothie a day. It’s a blast of goodness. They are packed full of nutrients, give you a ton of energy, help to detox the body, and are great for your skin. I usually make mine with one avocado, a bit of kale, cucumber, sometimes some spinach, a squeeze of lemon, some ground chia, and pure water. Total yumminess!

4) Do you have a fitness program you follow?

I practice yoga in the mornings about 5 times a week, and I go for a 40 – 60 min easy run about 5 times a week as well. I like to hit my yoga mat in the mornings to boost my metabolism and get into an energized state before starting my day. I normally do my run around 3:30 or 4pm when I start to feel sluggish and tired. When I run I’m not trying to win any marathons. I keep it nice and easy so I don’t feel physically stressed or exhausted afterwards. I end up feeling rejuvenated, which gets me through the rest of the evening, and it also helps me get a solid good night’s sleep.

5) If you were to give a gift from Clementine Fields, what would you give them?
