Inspiration and Wellness with Vered
Our skin says a lot about us. Laugh lines, worry lines, scars, freckles; whether we want it to or not, our skin silently reveals tiny details about our lives. Even internal problems, be they mental or physical, can manifest on our skin. Beautiful skin, therefore, cannot be separated from a healthy mind and beautiful sense of self.
Inspired by nature, Vered Back, founder of Vered Organic Botanicals, believes in healing above all else. To Back, radiant skin is not simply a matter of aesthetic, but a reflection of mental and physical health. After struggling with illness herself, Back discusses some of the simple things that brought her body back into balance. Her dedication to provide mindful skincare through Vered Organic Botanicals operates on a holistic notion of body and self, valuing purity and simplicity above all. From her go-to skin and stomach friendly foods, to her suggested summer skin routine, Back discusses what she does to stay happy and healthy.
Before starting Vered, you worked with essential oils for 23 years. What did you find was lacking from other lines and essential oils alone?
Eight years ago I got very ill. No one could find the cause of my illness. My symptoms were just getting worse and they are too many to mention. I had seen top-of-line experts (conventional doctors) all over NYC and they all told me that nothing was wrong with me.
I understood very quickly that the only person that could save me was me. I went to study herbalism because I also understood (after extensive research and testing) that there’s pathogens that they cannot detect in any kind of blood tests.
Two weeks into the course it felt like it was the most natural thing for me to do. I started to make my own extractions with every herb that was anti- bacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal.
Ten days into taking my extractions I started to feel a shift in my health that I hadn’t felt in 8 years.
In the process of healing myself I was still giving facials to my clients. It felt natural to combine both the essential oils with the new knowledge that I had just learned about the herbs. I made the connection that if I could heal my body internally I can also heal it externally. Same is true for all of us.
Since today, that oil is my number one seller, the Therapeutic Balancing Face oil. This is when I felt satisfied that I could provide something authentic, complete and balanced that could really help people to heal.
You’ve mentioned before the significance of diet for healthy skin; do you have a go-to snack/meal/ingredient that you like to have when your skin feels a little off?
The most important thing is to keep your body alkaline with fruits and vegetables. If the body is acidic then you know that inflammation is present. That’s where all the problems begin.
A healthy diet and the art of detoxification is almost 80% for healthy skin. There is no healthy skin with a poor diet, negative thoughts, and conventional skin care lines.
I suggest to those who are suffering with acne or any kind of skin condition to work with an expert who is knowledgeable and experience with detoxification of the body.
Especially for the kidneys, liver, and one of the most important things that most people don’t know about is the lymph system. This is where parasites, heavy metals and fungus love to hang out.
Most people get stuck on the GI track which is great, but it’s definitely not enough because if you are chronically ill or suffered for many years from acne, eczema or psoriasis more than likely you have a stagnation problem in one of those organs.
The stagnation in your kidneys and lymph system are going to show on your skin since it’s the largest organ of your body, and because when those can’t function well anymore the toxins need to come out somehow.
At that point you ideally should only eat only vegetables and fruits since they are the only two things that will detoxify your body.
Most doctors will not recommend fruit because of the sugar content. This is one of the biggest myths out there since fruits are simple sugars. Fructose and Glucose are the two principle energies (or fuels) for our cells and they are helping to eliminate the body of Candida. They are also extremely high in antioxidants and estrogen.
They also have properties which go very deep into the tissue and clean the congestion in the lymph system.
Best fruits for cleaning the body are grapes, watermelon, and grapefruit.
Some herbs to clean the kidneys : Dandelion Leaf, Juniper Berry, Stinging Nettle, Cleavers, Marshmallow Root, Goldenrod.
Herbs to support the stomach (GI track) : Mullein Leaf, Plantian Leaf, Gentian Root, Fennel Seed, Ginger Root. Supplements with good probiotics.
Herbs for the Lymph nodes: Red Root, Echinacea Root, Parsley Leaf,
Bayberry Root, Poke Root, Red Clover, Chlorella and Spirulina. Herbs for Parasites: Black Walnut Hull, Cat’s Claw Bark, Goldenseal, Wormwood Herb, and Thyme Leaf.
In a previous interview, you said Vered was inspired by nature; what do you like to do or where do you like to go when you’re seeking inspiration?
I am inspired by flowers, trees, the ocean, the desert, animals, and taking pictures of all the above. That is where I find my peace and energy to create. However, my biggest inspiration comes from working with the essences of plants and with the emotional conditions of people who may be going through a difficult time and watching how a person can heal through so many layers (mind, body and spirit) from just a single whiff of an oil or one of my perfumes. The Blue Violet perfume was my inspiration to heal the heart. Each oil in that perfume is a heart healer – especially the Blue Violet.
What was the biggest obstacle you had to overcome in creating Vered?
I wasn’t aware that opening a business required myself to wear so many hats. What I really love to do and I am really good at is actually making my products and helping my clients with not only their skin but also with their diet, lifestyle, and supplements.
I also have a passion for plant research and the various ways they can heal the body and the skin.
Unfortunately that is not enough to have a successful business. You need to deal with all the other aspects of packaging, labeling laws, distribution, branding, marketing and lots of administrative duties. Thankfully I have some great people around me who are happy to do that.
If you were to ever start another beauty product line, what would it look like?
I would never think about starting any other beauty product line other then the one that I have created already. Every product that I have created now has so many years of knowledge, a story, love and thought that came into them. I am very proud and satisfied
with my creations since it came from the most authentic place and I know that this is my path.
Do you have any ideas for new Vered products in the works?
Yes. I will be coming out very soon with an oil base face cleanser. For now I have my Herb-Infused toner that is an amazing (in a non-drying way) that can be used to cleanse, hydrate and tone the face. However, I still find there are some people that are used to using a traditional cleanser. Personally I am not a huge fan of cleansers but I am creating a cleanser that will do the work, while providing excellent hydration and will be gentle for the skin.
Are there any specific products you would recommend to maintain healthy skin in the summer?
I am not a big fan of sunscreen. Most of them contain chemicals that when they come into contact with the sun the percentage of you getting skin cancer is actually higher than if you will not wear it.
I am not saying that you should fry yourself in the sun but definitely don’t let doctors scare you. Be reasonable with yourself and remember that the sun will give your skin nutrition, vitamins and will lift your spirit. If you must use a sunscreen make sure that the only ingredient is zinc oxide.
I think that your beauty routine should not be too complicated, so I would recommend to cleanse from all dirt, debris and dead skin cells that accumulate during the day. This can be done with using the Herb-Infused Toner Day and Night on the face, neck and décolletage.
The second product would be to nourish the skin. Depending on your skin condition. For problematic skin I would recommend the Therapeutic Balancing Face oil and the Anti-aging treatment oil for normal to dry skin.
The Anti-Wrinkle Eye Treatment oil is excellent for all skin types. It will also protect the area around your eyes from hyper-pigmentation.
Once a week for a deeper cleanse, I would recommend my Detox Mask or Le Chocolate Citrus Foaming Face Scrub.
