The Physical & Psychological Benefits of Essential Oils
We all know essential oils (organic substances from the volatile liquid of plants) smell sensational. But they’re so much more than just super scents, possessing the power to heal and maintain good health…
Aromatherapy is the practice of using essential oils for physical and psychological wellbeing. Dating back nearly one thousand years, it’s used by cultures the world over to relieve and prevent a wide array of ailments ranging from anxiety to insomnia, bacteria to viruses and beyond.
How It Works
Essential oils travel into the bloodstream after being absorbed into the skin. They can relieve physical problems such as inflammation, arthritis and fungal infections and influence the Limbic system – the part of the brain that controls mood, learning and memory.
Here are a few of our favourites & the benefits they bring:
Lavender calms and relaxes, disinfects, enhances blood circulation and treats respiratory problems. Additionally, dermatologists have dubbed it one of the most effective oils in the treatment of acne and excellent at reducing the signs of scarring. It also expertly heals cuts, burns and wounds.
Our Lavender & Fo-Ti Cleansing Milk by Tammy Fender is one of the loveliest facial cleansers we have yet to come across. Living up to the origin of its name (“to wash” in Latin), its lavender properties will do double duty, healing fine lines, wrinkles and discolorations and leaving you with a next level feeling of clean.
DIY: Just because we love lavender, doesn’t mean bugs do too. Keep moths and other insects away from clothes (especially those favourite wool sweaters!) by sprinkling lavender essential oil on cotton balls and placing them in closets and dresser drawers.
Rosemary has been found to stimulate hair growth, alleviate respiratory problems, diminish pain, kill harmful bacteria and alleviate stress. Rosemary oil is used extensively in hair products for a number of reasons: it prevents the scalp from getting dry and flaky, stimulates hair follicles for strong, healthy hair and staves off of premature graying.
Our Feed Your Volume Shampoo by Yarok is an uplifting (literally and figuratively) power product that harnesses the abilities of this amazing oil (as well as a whole host of organic herbs, flowers, vitamins, minerals and essential oils). A terrific treat for your hair, scalp and senses, it’s sure to add a little extra oomph to your day.
DIY: Before a big presentation or an important interview, take a whiff of pure rosemary essential oil. It helps improve concentration and maintain alertness!
Eucalyptus is an anti-inflammatory, decongestant, deodorant and antiseptic. Amongst other things, it can prevent dental infections (cavities, plaque, gingivitis), naturally treat lice and control blood sugar.
Our Fresh Pet Aromablend by (Toronto’s own) Graydon is a little gem with big benefits. Harnessing the power of eucalyptus (along with clove, geranium, lemon, lavender and more), if you have a pet, it’s the thing to get. To use, simply add a few drops to the area that needs freshening up. And just like that, your dog’s brush or your cat’s crate will be germ-free and smell lovely.
DIY: Due to its antibacterial and deodorant nature, eucalyptus makes for the perfect room freshener. Place in a spray bottle, distill in water and use to keep bacteria at bay.
